Department of Periodontology

About Us

  • The Department of Periodontics SRMKDC deals with the etiology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases of the periodontium. We cater to various patient categories in addition to our routine outpatients including geriatric and hospital in-patients.
  • Periodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the peripheral tissues around the teeth. i.e., tissues surrounding the teeth. It deals with the diseases and treatment of the tissues surrounding the teeth (periodontal tissues) The subject of periodontics is introduced in the 3rd year of the undergraduate program which comprises theoretical and practical learning of the subject.
  • Students simultaneously learn about the treatments theoretically and practically and apply them to the patients. At the undergraduate level, students are allowed to do scaling as it is the 1st line of treatment for any periodontal disease. A periodontist as such does not only deal with the diseases associated with teeth but also the diseases that destabilize a tooth from its socket. Mainly they deal with the diseases of the gums, the surrounding bone, and the joint which attaches the tooth to its socket.

Teaching activity of the department

The Department of Periodontics boasts of efficient and student-friendly teachers. They work as a team to prepare students to succeed in a competitive workplace

  • Through lectures, tutorials, and clinical sessions, undergraduates study the normal and pathological tissues of the periodontium as well as the etiology and classification of gingival and periodontal disease.
  • Third and final-year undergraduate students are trained to treat patients with periodontal problems. They are also allowed to perform simple periodontal surgical procedures during their final year.
  • Undergraduate students are assessed regularly through viva voice, group discussions, and assignments.
  • Postgraduate graduate students are given challenging cases to develop their clinical skills and patient management.
  • The postgraduates in addition to routine treatment of periodontitis that includes respective or regenerative therapy, are also trained in, site preservation and development for implants (guided bone regeneration, sinus augmentation, block grafts).

OUR VISION

To outshine as a centre of excellence in providing remarkable periodontal health education, ethical research and quality services to the community.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to provide our patients with best and most comprehensive healthcare of periodontium, thereby reducing the load of systemic diseases in the community.
