CME program on Family Medicine-History and Future

The lecture session was commenced with welcome address by Dr. M. Logaraj, Professor & Head, Department of Community Medicine, wherein the guest lecture, Dean and Medical Superitendent of medical college, HODs of all Departments, Faculty members and under graduate and post graduate and allied health students were formally welcome by him. Subsequently, Dr. A. Sundaram, Dean delivered a presidential address, in which emergence of family medicine, its importance and various componenets were highlighted to particpants by him. He also urged students learn more about family medicine and practice it once they have completed their courses here. After his speech, Dr. Sunil Abraham, the guest speaker, explained history and future of family medicine in our country. During his presentation, 10 important points such as 1.Comprehensiveness of care, 2.Anticipation of problems and continuity of care, 3.Personal relationships with a patient, 4.Medical knowledge and skills characteristic of family medicine, 5.Values and attitudes that enhance family medicine, 6.Problem definition and medical decision making, 7.Problem management and resource coordination, 8.Care of the individual within the family context, 9. Involvement with the communityand 10. attentiveness to practice organization were explained to the participants. He concluded saying that the doctors have a wider scope for practicing the family medicine in Indian society and family physicians have greater roles in addressing various health problems of the community using wholistic approaches
